Background
Silver is a versatile precious metal with ever-increasing industrial applications in a world moving towards sustainable solutions. Huge research and development work on new silver-based applications is underway in some of the most advanced refineries, research laboratories, universities and science and technology institutions. Unlike the rest of the world, where 55% of silver used is for industrial applications, in India, only about 15% of silver is for industrial use. Thus, India presents a great opportunity to increase the use of silver for industrial applications. Second, in a post-covid world where people are looking for safe antimicrobial solutions at home, silverware offers a unique and effective value proposition. There is huge scope today to promote and expand the reach and relevance of silverware, both in India and abroad. Third, in the minds of Indian consumers, the case for investing in silver is weak compared to that of gold. This is partly due to the lack of awareness and relatively weak communication of the case for investing in silver. Fortunately, some innovations like the Silver ETF and the MCX Bulldex are changing the landscape of silver investment in India.
