Ajout\u00e9date<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 1987 the US guided missile frigate Stark, calmly sailing the waters of the Persian Gulf, was suddenly blown apart by an Exocet missile fired by a MiG in the air force of Iraq\u2019s Saddam Hussein. A fifth of the ship\u2019s crew were killed and many others horribly burned or wounded. This event jump-started one of the most mysterious and underwritten conflicts in American history: \u00ab\u00a0The Tanker War,\u201d which was waged for control of the Mideast\u2019s oil supply, and was carried out in the shadow of the Iran-Iraq War. Losing on the battlefield, Ayatollah Khomeini\u2019s Iran had decided to close the Persian Gulf against shipments from Iraq, and especially from their oil-rich backers, the tiny emirate of Kuwait. The Kuwaitis appealed for international help to protect their tankers, and the Soviet Union was first to respond. This prompted the United States to react even more energetically, and America sent its own fleet to the Gulf, raising the Stars and Stripes over Kuwait\u2019s commercial tankers. The result was a free-for-all, as the Iranians laid mines throughout the narrow passage and launched their attack boats to torpedo both US ships and tankers. The sixth largest ship in the world, the tanker Bridgeton, hit an Iranian mine and was flooded. The US Navy fought its largest surface battle since World War II against the Ayatollah\u2019s assault boats which mainly came out at night. One convoy, heavily escorted by US and British escorts, ran into a huge minefield, and while the escorts timidly backed out, the tankers were left to their own devices. In the meantime, US Navy Seals had arrived in the Gulf, setting up shop aboard an abandoned hulk from which they would sally out in fast craft to combat the Iranians. These actions have become well known in Special Forces literature but until now the public has not realized the magnitude of this secret war. As Saddam Hussein, who had instigated the conflict, looked on, and Kuwait sought foreign protection, Iranian gunners fired shore-based Silkworm missiles against US ships, a fact which, if made known at the time, would have required the US Congress to declare war against Iran. In July 1988, nervous triggermen aboard the cruiser USS Vincennes shot an Iranian airliner out of the sky, killing 300 civilians. This event came one month before the end of the war, and may have been the final straw to influence the Ayatollah to finally drink from his\u201cpoisoned chalice,\u201d closing it down. Lee Zatarain, a Washington-based attorney, employing the Freedom of Information act, recently released Pentagon documents, countless firsthand interviews, and a dogged determination to get to the truth, has revealed in The Tanker War a conflict that few Americans recognized at the time.
